Self-care is having a real moment right now, with everything that is going on in the world it is vital that you look after your own mental health, body and relationships. With everyone staying at home at the moment it gives us so much more time to focus on ourselves and making some key improvements in our daily lives.

Keep reading for some top tips for introducing self-care into your routine and daily life…

  1. Drink plenty of water

Staying hydrated is super important even when you’re not leaving the house as much. Every function in your body requires water and when your body is properly hydrated, it performs so much more efficiently. When you’re at home it can be easy to lose track of how much water you’re drinking, try using a reusable bottle to keep track of your hydration levels and give yourself goals to hit throughout the day.

  • Make a menu for the week

Trying to keep some sort of routine is key when you’re spending a lot of time at home. It’s super easy to fall into getting up when you want, staying in PJ’s and grazing throughout the day. But keeping a routine with your meals is much healthier for you and will keep your body functioning as well as it can. Write out a menu for the week and try to stick to it.

  • Write a to do list for the day

When you wake up in the morning, write out a list of tasks and activities you’d like to achieve throughout the day. By doing this you give yourself a focus and purpose for things to focus on through the day. Try to prioritise in order of urgency so you get the most important things done first.

  • Try an online yoga class/guided meditation

If yoga and meditation is new to you, then now is the perfect time to give it a go. There are hundreds of online yoga classes that are super easy to follow. Introducing some mindfulness into your routine will help keep yourself positive and motivated throughout this time and trying a new hobby is always exciting!

  • Take time to decompress at the end of the day

It’s super important to take time to breathe, reflect and evaluate. Self-care doesn’t have to be super lavish or expensive facials; it’s about taking time to yourself and giving yourself a break. Put your phone down for 10 minutes at the end of the day and sit with your thoughts, try to focus on the positives from the day and what you have managed to achieve.

  • Move for at least 30 minutes a day

Get your body moving for at least 30 minutes per day. It is vital for keeping yourself in a good headspace, exercise releases positive endorphins which is exactly what we need at this time! Try a home workout, get out for a run or walk and get your heart pumping!

  • Sleep!

Sleep is another super important factor in self-care. Sleep has been a huge topic for the last few months, and it is even more important with us spending more time on our own. During sleep, your brain rids itself of toxins, consolidates memories and refreshes. So, you can literally sleep your way through self-care!

  • Confront any negativity

When dealing with any negative thoughts, it’s best to confront those head on. Write down what is troubling you and reflect back on this. Try to understand why you might be feeling this way and what you can do to alleviate any stress or upset and then add this factor into your daily to do list. Then every evening look back on any actions you’ve taken and if these have helped in a positive way.

  • FaceTime friends and family

With social distancing and self-isolation being so prevalent right now, it is really easy to withdraw from friends and family who you normally see regularly. Make sure you stay in touch with the outside world by regularly reaching out to your friends and family and maintaining that line of contact. Organise a ‘FaceTime Wine Night’ or a ‘Family Virtual Quiz’ night that everyone can get involved with and look forward to.

  1. Step away from your laptop/work at the end of the day

With many of us now working from home when we don’t usually, it can become really easy to lose the normal structure of your workday. Try to keep to regular hours and step away from the emails once you hit 5pm! It is really important for self-care to maintain a good work/life balance, so make sure you’re still giving yourself time to relax!
