Being an eco-savvy shopper in 2022 is easier than ever before, but that’s not to say it’s a walk in the park. We all know we should be shopping consciously, aiming to reduce our waste and our contribution to landfill. But with every other brand claiming to have eco-credentials, it can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff.

If you’re a lover of beauty products and want to make sure your money is supporting brands that align with your values, it pays to do your research. From the origin of ingredients to the manufacturing conditions, many brands have weak links in the chain. If you’re looking to make more sustainable purchasing decisions this year, here are a few things to consider…

Quality Over Quantity

When you love all things beauty, it can be easy to get carried away, filling your basket with lots of things you don’t need. A great way to be more eco-conscious in this regard is to get your sampling fix when you’re visiting pharmacies and department stores, and save your money to purchase fewer, higher-quality products.

A great example of this is the best-selling Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Rich Multi-Purpose Dry Oil Spray. Vegan friendly and with 98.1% natural origin ingredients, its eco-credentials are just as impressive as its versatility. The spray can be used on your hair, face or body to provide light-weight moisture making it a great value all-rounder that you’re sure to get plenty of use from.

Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging

One of the simplest changes you can make to how you shop is to make sustainable packaging an element of your purchasing decisions. By choosing easily recyclable packaging, be it cardboard, paper, glass or curbside plastics, you reduce your contribution to landfill.

A growing number of beauty brands now use recyclable packaging, so there’s no reason to support those that aren’t making it a priority. Look for the three green arrows going in a triangle for confirmation that an item can be recycled. And for bonus points, check if there is a number in the middle of the symbol, this signifies how much of it has been made from recycled materials.

Natural Ingredients

As well as choosing planet-friendly packaging, it’s worthwhile considering the ingredients that go into your favourite skin and beauty products. Natural, fair-trade and organic ingredients are the creme de la creme, not just for the environment but for your skin too.

Moisturisers and cleansers from high-street brands frequently contain synthetic drying agents, one of the main ones being sodium lauryl sulphate. These cheap synthetic additives have the potential to irritate the skin, clog pores, and cause redness. Organic and natural skincare avoid these harmful ingredients, making them less prone to leave your skin feeling tight, dry and irritated.

Shop the Vegan, Cruelty-Free and Organic ranges and find a new favourite.

Support Great Brands

The skincare and beauty industry is a competitive market, so show eco-friendly brands the love by supporting them with your purchases. Along with buying from brands that are in line with your values, there are plenty of other ways you can support them too.

Brand awareness is a massive focus in the world of marketing, so tell your friends all about the products you love and give them a shout-out on social media. Makeup and skincare products go viral on social media platforms every day, and by helping to increase awareness of great brands, you can support a good cause without spending a penny.
