Here at Fragrance Direct we've always been good at taking care of our skin in the sun, but recently we've been turning our focus to hair. The sun can cause damage to hair, leaving it damaged and dry looking. Even if your hair doesn't actually get sun burn, the UV rays will break down the cuticle which then leaves your locks looking frizzy, dry and damaged. There are some actions you can take to help keep your hair protected, hydrated and healthy in the sun, so keep reading!

First up' wearing a sun hat is the easiest way to keep your locks protected from the sun!

However, let's talk about products you can use to keep your hair glossy and healthy'

Leave In Conditioner

Leave in conditioner is your best friend when you're out for a day at the beach or chilling by the pool. Comb some leave in conditioner through your hair before you head out and tie up into a bun to keep your hair hydrated throughout the day. Especially if you have coloured hair! We love the Khlorane Leave In Cream with Mango Butter, it smells divine! Also, mango butter is exceptionally rich in natural fatty acids for deep hydration. If you prefer something you can spritz on the go then pick up the Sexy Hair Healthy Soy Tri Wheat Leave In Conditioner.

Hair Mask

Prevent or reverse any damage with a super nourishing hair mask. After a day out in the sun your hair will be crying out for a bit of tlc. Even if you haven't been sitting in the sun or swimming in the sea all day your hair can still get damaged from going about your daily life. Use a hair mask at least once a week to prevent any damage from occurring and give your hair the treatment it needs. The Macadamia Deep Repair Masque uses a combination of macadamia and argan oils to give your hair an instant rejuvenation. The Anatomicals masks are great as they are single use and so easy to take on your travels, we love the Giving Good Head Coconut and Honey Hair Mask.

UV Hair Protection

Basically sun cream for your hair without making it super greasy and yuck. Protecting your hair from UV rays, chlorine and salt water is really important in order to maintain elasticity and moisture levels. The Ultrasun Protection Daily UV Hair Protector is ideal to take away with you, just spritz onto wet or dry hair before you head out for the day and it will leave your hair shiny and protected.

Scalp protection

If your not wearing a hat or head scarf then you can't forget about protecting your scalp! Make sure you apply a spray sunscreen to your scalp to make sure you don't get any painful sun burn which will then flake and peel (not ideal!). Using a spray product won't leave your roots looking greasy and heavy. We recommend the Malibu Sun Protection Lotion Spray SPF 30.

Shampoo

Similarly, to using a mask, when you wash your hair after a day of sun exposure make sure you're using a hydrating shampoo that will replenish the cuticles of the hair. We love the Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating Clarifying Shampoo, it's gentle enough for every day use but includes hydrating botanical extracts.

Just remember it's just as important to look after your hair as it is your skin. You may not notice the immediate effects of sun damage on your hair like you would with your skin, but the they can be detrimental to your hair health!
