Summer skincare is all about the lightweight gel creams, tinted moisturisers and sweat proof primers, however as we head into the Autumn months you might want to reach for a few richer options. Autumn brings about cooler weather and a drop in humidity, which makes for drier air and consequently drier skin!

As soon as the temperature drops, our skin lets us know about it! Skin tightness, breakouts and dryness are common complaints in the colder months as the skin tries to regulate itself against harsh weather, central heating and dry air. Fear not, we’re here with some top transitional tips to help thwart autumnal skin-related problems!

1. Don’t skip exfoliating!

After the hotter Summer months of tanning and lazing around in the sun, uneven skin tone can be a problem for a lot of people. Use an at home exfoliating product once or twice a week to buff off the dead skin cells that sit on top of your skin. By effectively resurfacing the skin it leaves you with a radiant glow and a much more even tone. FD recommends: Elemis Superfood Blackcurrant Jelly Exfoliator

2. Opt for a richer moisturiser

Say goodbye to the lightweight gel creams you’ve been using throughout the Summer months. It’s time to reach for a heavier cream that is made with ceramides, these are essential and fatty acids that occur naturally in the skin but need a bit of a boost in the colder months. Upgrading to a more hydrating formula will help the skin to retain as much water as possible and keep the skin nourished throughout the colder months. Another ingredient to look out for is hyaluronic acid, this helps draw as much water to the skin as possible. FD recommends: Avant Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Face and Eye Cream

3. Try a skincare booster in your routine

Give your skin some extra TLC by adding a skincare booster into your regime. If you don’t usually use a serum or treatment, then the changing season is a great time to offer your skin something extra. Think of it as an additional skincare step that will really support your skin through the changing seasons. A hydrating serum will increase your skin’s water levels and make your moisturiser work even harder for you! FD recommends: Gatineau Aquamemory Moisture Replenish Concentrate

4. Swap your cleanser

As the temperatures plummet, so do the humidity levels and our skin loses moisture to the dry air. Make sure you counteract this by switching to a more hydrating cleanser. A micellar cleansing water can help hydrate the skin and support the skin’s barriers from the damaging effects of the weather. Try to look for a non-foaming cleanser as these can often dry out the skin even more. FD recommends: REN Clean Skincare Rosa Centifolia Hot Cloth Cleanser

5. Breakouts are pretty much guaranteed

Unless you have super clear skin all year round (lucky you!) then breakouts are pretty much guaranteed to pop up over the course of the changing seasons. But don’t panic, treat your skin to a mask that helps to draw out impurities, calm breakouts and exfoliate the skin too. Tailor which mask you use depending on your skin type and this extra step will help to keep any breakouts and inflammation at bay. FD recommends: L’Oreal Multi Masking Pure Clay Kit

6. Don’t forget SPF!

Although the weather might be cooling down as we head into Autumn, never forget to use SPF! UVA and UVB rays are damaging to the skin all year round and even in the winter you need to make sure you use an SPF to keep your skin protected. FD recommends: Ultrasun Tinted Sun Protection SPF 30

Your skin naturally changes throughout the changing seasons and you just need to adjust your skincare regime slightly to make sure it’s as happy as it can be. Try this small changes to give your skin the best chance throughout the cooler months!
