There’s no denying the appeal of a sun-kissed glow. No matter what your natural skin tone, even just the hint of a tan can help to make you look healthier and feel more confident, and that’s why so many of us reach for the fake tan as part of our regular routine.

While some of us prefer a deep golden tan to a subtle hint of summer, we’re all in agreement when it comes to faking it – a natural look is best. Throughout the colder months, achieving that fresh-off-the-beach glow sometimes seem impossible, and when your tan needs topping up every few days, maintaining it can be even harder.

If you’re stuck in a never-ending cycle of application, patchiness, and reapplication, consider the type of fake tan you use. If you’ve been applying the same extra-dark lotion since your college days, it might be time to think about the formula you're using and how well it suits you.

Here, you can find all you need to know about fake tanning mousses, sprays and lotions – prepare to get your glow on!

1. Mousse

Fake tan mousses don’t contain much moisture in their formula, so if you have oily skin, this could be the way to go. Aside from their lack of moisture, mousses tend to have a soft, silky feel, so they glide onto the skin and feel lovely.

If you’re a fake tan first timer, we recommend choosing a light mousse and applying with a mitt. Tanning mousses have an aerated formula, which means they leave a more even finish than thicker lotions – if you miss a spot, the line of colour difference won’t be quite so harsh.

Our favourite fake tan mousse is St. Tropez Gradual Tan, which has a lightweight formula and builds colour gradually, making it suitable for all skin tones. St. Tropez are tanning experts, and this hydrating mousse dries quickly, streak-free, and fades evenly. What more could you ask for?

2. Spray

Fake tan sprays are having a moment. Their easy-to-apply formula and consistent even finish make them an unbeatable option for busy tanners looking for a quick, fuss-free option.

Tanning sprays work best when you have somebody else around to apply them for you – reaching your back can be tricky, especially if you’re looking for an even finish, which, of course, you are.

Tip – make sure you apply spray tan in the bathroom (in a dry shower for complete safety), and move any towels or fabrics out of the range of the spray.

If you think spray is best for you, try our favourite St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Spray. This super-fine tanning spray is so lightweight you won’t feel it going on. The St. Tropez standard formula is infused with hydrating aloe vera and intense colour, so it leaves an ultra-smooth, long-lasting tan that can’t be beaten.

3. Lotion

Lotions are go-to for fake tanning masters thanks to their long-lasting colour. If you have the time and patience to apply your tan thoroughly – that means you’re sure you won’t miss a spot – choose a lotion for long-lasting colour and an even fade.

Lotion tanners are the best choice for dry, sensitive and mature skin because they’re often gentle, nourishing and moisturising. We adore Bondi Sands Self-Tanning Lotion for its rich colour, which is underlain with olive tones – not a drop of orange in sight!

Another fantastic option is NKD Skin’s Natural Tan Lotion, which is formulated with organic extracts to leave skin feeling nourished and can be built on to achieve the perfect colour.
