As the sun sets earlier and the nights begin to draw in, it’s time to embrace the warm comfort of home. Dark, dreary evenings may be one aspect of autumn, but the flipside is an abundance of cosy nights in. Anyone can plop themselves onto the sofa at the end of a long day, but with a bit of planning, you can make it an event. These tips will help you elevate a seemingly ordinary Friday night at home into something you’ll be looking forward to all week.

Set The Mood

The single most important thing you can do to make your evening at home feel more special than usual is to set the mood. Clear away any remnants of the day, dim the lights, wrap yourself in a luxuriously soft blanket, and nestle down knowing you have everything you need for the perfect night in.

Appeal to all of your senses by fragrancing the room using a diffuser or scented candle. In the same way that a bath is always infinitely more relaxing with the addition of a lovely candle, the right scent helps to set the mood for your evening and even help you drift off easier.

Try Yankee Candle Warm Cashmere, WoodWick Fireside or Price’s Cosy Nights Reed Diffuser.

Make It "Me Time"

Make the most of your downtime by adding some pampering to your night in. That foot scrub you’ve been meaning to open? Now is the time. The eye mask you read about last week? Order it! Skincare products, in particular, are great to use in the evening as they can help the skin regenerate overnight. Seeing as the weather is getting colder and harsher, a rich, hydrating face mask makes the perfect addition to a night in, but don’t forget the other parts of your body affected by the change in season. Your hands, feet and hair will all appreciate a little extra hydration, so make time to show them some TLC as part of your cosy night in.

Try Glamglow Thirstymud for a nourishing facial, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin Cream on chapped hands or feet, and Shu Uemura Ultimate Rest Serum to lock moisture into your hair.

Nourish or Nom

Snacks are life, and the right ones can make or break a good night in. By planning ahead, you can make sure you have all your favourite bite-sized favourites to hand and avoid having to bundle up to nip out on a biscuit run.

Whether you’re a crudites and hummus kind of gal or prefer something a little more substantial, there’s no right or wrong way to cater your cosy night in. Just do yourself a favour and have something yummy on hand to snack on. Putting thought into the food aspect of your night might seem like an unnecessary effort at first, but it can make a world of difference to your evening.

If you’re entertaining or want to try something unique, why not go for something a little extra, like fondue.

Mix Things Up

No cosy evening is complete without some form of entertainment, and there’s no shortage of options on that front. With record-breaking shows like Squid Game available to binge-watch on Netflix, you have a world of entertainment at your fingertips.

That being said, while the typical cosy night in involves a good movie or TV series, the novelty of that can soon wear off, especially if you’ve exhausted all the good shows on your streaming service. So, why not try something a little different?

Board games have come a long way since Monopoly and Cluedo, with options to appeal to every interest, age and skill level. Try Azul, an aesthetically appealing tile-placement game, or Qwixx for a fast and addictive dice game. Or, just sit and watch the fire crackle (you can even watch one on your TV if you don’t have a fireplace).

With a bit of forethought and the smallest amount of preparation, you can have endless cosy nights on demand. Enjoy snuggle season!
