It’s dark when you wake up and dark when you get home from work. The cloudy sky is grey, dull and on the verge of breaking open at any moment. At this time of year, many of us are fighting the “blahs”, where a lack of sunshine sees a general sense of melancholy start to creep in. Whether you’re experiencing SAD (seasonal affective disorder), are feeling a bit glum, or are simply looking for ways to improve your overall wellness, these six simple tips will help you on your way.

Gratitude Journal

Keeping a journal isn’t for everyone, but you might just want to jump on the bandwagon after reading this. Research at the University of Miami showed that a test group that wrote just a few sentences each week about things they were grateful for made the participants more optimistic and feel better about their lives. If reflecting and writing for a few minutes could improve your overall mood and wellness, that’s a tip that’s well worth trying.

Self-Care Routine

Note down a few easy, go-to things that make you happy, so you can fall back on them when life starts getting on top of you. As enjoying as it is to unwind with a glass of wine or a takeaway, ideally, your self-care should involve things that benefit your body or mind, like taking a long bubble bath, going for a walk with your favourite podcast, or giving yourself a pedicure with some great tunes on.

Hydrate For Health

Studies have found that even being slightly dehydrated can result in moodiness, difficulty concentrating and fatigue. So, if you start feeling lower than is usual for you, try to increase the amount of water you’re drinking and see if it makes an impact. The average amount of water a woman needs per day is 2.7 litres, so top up that water bottle and get sipping.

Nourish Your Body

We all know the importance of a healthy diet, but it’s often easier said than done. If you find yourself reaching for carbs and sugar, you’re not alone. These energy-rich, nutrient-poor foods give you a short boost of energy, but quickly wear off, leaving you lethargic. Make sure you’re eating plenty of colourful fruit and vegetables, and support your diet with a good health supplement for added wellbeing.

Social Time

When you’re feeling stressed, it can be easy to hide from the world, but as humans, we’re social creatures that long for connection. When you’re feeling disconnected, make a point of connecting with another person, even if it’s just smiling at the checkout person or holding the door open for a stranger. These little moments of connection add up and can turn around even the gloomiest of days.

Sleep

One of the best ways to wake up ready for a new day is to get a good night’s sleep. Start by getting into good habits, like avoiding screens within an hour of bedtime, investing in light-blocking curtains and going to bed at a reasonable time. If you don’t drop off easily, use tools that encourage sleep, like scented candles and white noise. For even better results, combine all of the above with a SAD sunrise alarm. This clever alarm simulates sunlight, which helps with your natural circadian rhythm and triggers the brain to release serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone.

Of course, sometimes our health and mood aren’t within our control. If you’re struggling with your wellbeing, experiencing consistently low moods or struggling with fatigue, speak to your GP in the first instance for expert advice.
