In July 1975 Armani partnered up with Sergio Galeotti where they released their first clothing line that year. A women’s collection launched the following year and gained positive attention, he was described as revolutionary. In his biography he says he ‘believed in getting rid of the artifice of clothing, I believe in natural colours.’ Armani’s designs became very popular throughout Europe but only caused a stir in America in the eighties when his clothes who worn by actor Richard Gere in American Gigolo and then later in Miami Vice, the popular television series. Armani become known for his suits as well as signing an important agreement with L’Oréal to create perfumes. The brand then expanded, introducing Armani Junior, Armani Jeans, Emporio underwear to name a few. In 1985 when he lost lifetime friend, partner and business executive Galeotti, Armani demonstrated to the world he was not just a designer but a business man as well. Armani expanded his operations, opening his first restaurant in 1989. By the end of the 1990’s Armani had over 200 stores and an annual sale of $2 billion. In 2005 Armani launched his first haute couture line as a personal challenge and more recently, hotels have become his latest venture, he opened his first in Dubai in 2010. It appears anything creative Armani in his career, has given a go. Armani’s collections today can now be found all around the world in over 500 major department stores and according to Forbes in 2018 Armani has a net worth of over $8 billion.
