Can you grade perfume according to strength?
From strongest to weakest: Perfume, Eau De Parfum, Eau De Toilette and Eau De Cologne, After Shave being the weakest with the least amount of oils in the fragrance. The higher the concentration of oils the longer your fragrance will last.

This depends on a person's skin type. Natural moisture in the skin will retain the fragrance for longer, so people with dry skin will find that fragrances will not tend to hold as well. The amount of acidity in our skin varies from person to person so fragrances will react accordingly, sometimes seeming to make the fragrance smell differently. It is a case of trial and error to find the fragrance to suit both you and your skin!

Whether you have dry or oily skin will determine how long a fragrance will last. As well as the traditional places; behind the ears and on the neck, try a light spray in your hair or applying the fragrance lower on your body so it rises. Another idea is to layer your fragrance by using a bath or shower gel, moisturiser or powder and then your fragrance to give a longer lasting effect. There is also the old trick of spraying the fragrance and walking through it to give that all over envelopment!

Every skin reacts differently so it is best to test a fragrance on your own skin rather than on a sales assistant or a spray card. Do not rub the fragrance, as this will only bruise or smudge their effect. Let the fragrance settle and dry a little before you smell each one. Three fragrances will be about as many as you can take without confusing your nose and getting mixed up in your mind.

This is very much down to personal preference. There is no difference in the fragrance, but some people may find a spray less wasteful as you do not end up with as much fragrance on your hands or fingers.

Fragrances are made up of different notes and can be composed of a thousand different ingredients to make every fragrance creation an individual one. There are three different notes. Top notes, the first ones you smell are very volatile and strong, but will shortly fade and give way to the middle notes and the heart of the fragrance. Later, the bottom notes will emerge to give an indication of a depth and strength of the fragrance.

On average, the shelf life of a fragrance is 3-5 years. Where possible fragrances should be kept cool and dry and out of direct sunlight. Ideally, opened bottles will last longer if they are kept in a box.

Yes. A perfume should never be allowed to overpower its surroundings. Less is always more appropriate than more. During the day, and summer months try the lighter fragrances where as evenings and winter lend themselves to heavier fragrances. Plan on having a range of fragrances that might include a sexy oriental, a sophisticated multi-floral, a fresh green, a delicious fruity type, a single flower fragrance or simple bouquet for lighter occasions. After all we all choose different clothes and accessories dependent on the time of day, time of year and occasion so why should we not apply this to the fragrance we choose.
