In the early 18th century, Johann Maria Farina created a fragrance and named it eau de cologne, after the town in which he lived. The license for this fragrance was bought by Wilhelm Muelhens later on in the 18th century and continued to be popular ever since. Now Muelhens is owned by Maurer and Wirtz, but it is still produced in Cologne. Muelhens most famous brand is 4711.
