In 1915 a New York chemist T.L Williams noticed his younger sister using a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust around her eyes. He adapted the formula and sold it locally under the name Last Brow Ine. Eventually the name was adapted to Maybelline, a combination of Vaseline and Maybel, the name of his sister. It is under this name that the company is now famous throughout the world The Maybelline Ultra Lash mascara in the 1960s was the first mascara product aimed at the masses to be sold anywhere in the world. The legendary slogan, Maybe she’s born with it, maybe its Maybelline, was coined in the early 1990s and has been used in all of its advertising campaigns since, making the brand instantly recognisable.
