Founded in 1837 by William Proctor, a candlemaker, and James Gamble, a soapmaker, Proctor & Gamble was formed. As radio became more popular in the 1920s and 1930s, the company sponsored a number of radio programs. As a result, these shows often became commonly known as "soap operas". Now one of the world's biggest companies, it was named as 2008's Advertiser of the Year at the Cannes International Advertising Festival. P&G are responsible for a number of household names including Duracell, Gilette, Olay, Pantene and Wella.
