Starting the company by selling his younger brothers bicycle for a knitting machine, Luciano Benetton saw a gap in the market for brightly coloured clothing. In 1968 he opened his first store, which grew to 800 in 120 countries worldwide by 1989 with the help of Flavio Briatore (now F1 Benetton boss).
